WASHINGTON, D.C., November 21, 2024 – The INGAA Foundation released the Practical Guide for Environmental Inspectors, a new best practices document for use by Environmental Inspectors during the construction of gas and liquid facilities and pipelines.
The guide offers a new perspective in assessing and documenting construction activities as it relates to environmental and sensitive features in or near the construction area. This is intended to ensure pipeline-operator and construction-contractor compliance with permitting and landowner agreements. Moreover, the guide provides a baseline knowledge level to Environmental Inspectors entering the field and assists in knowledge transfer to the next generation of Environmental Inspectors.
“In creating this guideline, JIVA Consulting and the project committee developed an effective 150-page practical guide based on more than 3,000 pages of content related to construction in environmentally sensitive zones that can be adapted for a range of projects,” said Mike Istre, INGAA Foundation Director of Research & Project Management.
Environmental Inspectors have a multidisciplinary role where they must collaborate with other general and specialized inspectors and management, using their expertise to proactively identify potential environmental challenges and provide recommendations to ensure construction activities do not have an adverse effect on the environment. The document aims to provide Environmental Inspectors across the industry with best practices, as well as some background and context beyond the existing regulations.
“Recently, the INGAA Foundation has prioritized efforts to facilitate knowledge transfer of best practices, as evidenced in this practical guide,” noted Hebe Shaw, Executive Director of the INGAA Foundation. “The Practical Guide for Environmental Inspectors will help to ensure those best practices are streamlined across the industry and further highlights the natural gas pipeline industry’s commitment to continuous improvement in all that we do.”
This document is not intended to replace formal training, regulation, or company-specific practices; it is a complementary guide to those sources. The Practical Guide for Environmental Inspectors is available to the public through the INGAA Foundation website: https://ingaa.org/a-practical-guide-for-environmental-inspectors/
