Natural Gas Council applauds permitting provisions in Bipartisan Budget Agreement

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, United States – The Natural Gas Council (NGC) issued the following statement in response to the energy permitting provisions in the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 announced by President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Saturday:

“On behalf of the individuals who produce, transport, and deliver natural gas to customers and communities across the nation, we applaud the bipartisan agreement on the debt limit which avoids default and takes a good first step towards fixing the current, broken permitting processes for energy infrastructure in the United States.  The provisions to modernize the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) are a welcome start towards achieving the kind of permitting reform needed to get the United States back to building energy infrastructure of all kinds.

“While the agreement does not address many of the key issues surrounding permitting of natural gas infrastructure projects, the NGC urges Congress to pass the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023 and to build on this momentum by continuing to advance Senate proposals that make additional necessary changes to our permitting processes.”

The Natural Gas Council was formed in 1992, uniting all sectors of the natural gas industry to work together toward common goals.  The five full members of the Council — the American Gas Association, the American Petroleum Institute, the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America, the Independent Petroleum Association of America and the Natural Gas Supply Association — collectively represent nearly all the companies that produce, transport and distribute natural gas consumed in the United States.  Leadership of the NGC rotates annually. www.NaturalGasCouncil.org
