The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) announced today the release of its updated Greenhouse Gas Emissions Commitments, reinforcing INGAA members’ focus on reducing individual GHG emissions from natural gas transmission and storage operations. These commitments build on the association’s 2018 Methane Emissions Commitments to continuously improve practices to minimize methane emissions in a prudent and environmentally responsible manner.
“Today’s commitments reiterate our pledge to address climate change while continuing to provide clean, reliable energy to consumers across the United States,” said Amy Andryszak, President and CEO of INGAA. “I am proud our members are building upon previous methane emissions commitments to further reduce all GHG emissions across operations in pursuit of a cleaner energy future.”
Last month, INGAA published its inaugural Climate Report, which detailed members’ productive efforts to address climate change. The report highlighted industry’s progress to-date and showcased specific actions and commitments made by individual INGAA members. This report was drafted to demonstrate the real-life implementation of INGAA’s 2021 Climate Statement, in which INGAA members pledged to reach net-zero GHG emissions from natural gas transmission and storage operations by 2050.
Andryszak continues: “Our work is not finished, and our members are dedicated to continuously reviewing and improving their practices to minimize GHG emissions. INGAA’s GHG Commitments are another important step to meeting our dual goals of reducing emissions while delivering affordable energy safely and reliably to American households and businesses.
“When it comes to methane emissions, our members participate in a number of voluntary and regulatory programs and initiatives to reduce methane emissions and work closely with regulators to identify appropriate enhancements to reduce the risk of leaks, improve detection methods, and advance standard practices.”
In addition to outlining actions and considerations for reducing methane and carbon dioxide emissions, the commitments also highlight INGAA members’ support of the development of new emissions reduction technologies and practices, and encourage information-sharing related to reducing emissions across the natural gas transmission and storage sector.
